Where to Stay in Phuket: The Best Areas & Hotels We’d Actually Recommend

Where to Stay in Phuket: The Best Areas & Hotels We’d Actually Recommend

One thing we realized very quickly in Phuket is this:

Where you stay completely changes the kind of trip you’ll have.

Phuket isn’t the type of destination where every beach feels the same. Some areas are loud and energetic, others are slow and peaceful, while a few feel almost luxurious without even trying.

And honestly, choosing the right area matters more here than choosing the “perfect” hotel.

After spending time exploring different parts of the island, these are the areas we genuinely think are best to stay in — depending on the kind of trip you want.

Patong — Best for First-Time Visitors & Nightlife

Patong is chaotic.

There’s traffic, music, beach vendors, nightlife, night markets, tourists everywhere… and somehow, it all becomes part of the Phuket experience.

If it’s your first time visiting Phuket, staying in Patong honestly makes life easier. Everything is nearby — beaches, restaurants, shopping malls, cafés, tours, nightlife, and transport.

You’re never far from the action.

We stayed here during part of the trip and completely understood why most travelers choose it, especially for short stays.

Stay Here If:

  • You want nightlife
  • You like busy, energetic places
  • You want everything nearby
  • It’s your first Phuket trip

Hotel We’d Recommend:

Four Points by Sheraton Phuket Patong Beach Resort

This hotel gets the location balance right.

It’s close enough to Bangla Road and central Patong when you want the energy, but far enough to still feel calm at night. The beach is literally across the road, and after long days exploring Phuket, coming back here felt comfortable and easy.

The pools are great, the rooms are modern, and the whole place feels relaxed without trying too hard to be “luxury.”

Honestly, for a short Phuket trip, it’s hard to go wrong here.

Kata Beach — Best for a Relaxed Beach Vacation

Kata felt like the calmer, prettier cousin of Patong.

The beach is cleaner, the vibe is slower, and the area feels more balanced overall. You still have restaurants, beach bars, cafés, and shops — but without the overwhelming crowds.

This was probably the area where we felt most relaxed during the trip.

It’s the kind of place where mornings start slowly, afternoons disappear on the beach, and evenings end with sunset dinners overlooking the ocean.

Stay Here If:

  • You want a peaceful beach vibe
  • You’re traveling as a couple
  • You prefer sunsets over nightlife
  • You want a slower pace

Hotel We’d Recommend:

The Shore at Katathani

This place feels like Phuket in movie form.

Private pool villas, ocean views, quiet surroundings — everything here feels calm and beautifully designed. It’s definitely more of a luxury stay, but if you’re doing a honeymoon or celebrating something special, this is easily one of the best experiences in Phuket.

Waking up to views of the Andaman Sea here honestly feels unreal.

Karon — Best Balance Between Busy & Peaceful

Karon sits right between Patong and Kata — and somehow takes the best parts of both.

You still get nightlife, restaurants, beach access, and convenience, but it feels much less intense than Patong. The beach itself is long, beautiful, and usually less crowded too.

We loved Karon because it felt easy.

Nothing was too far, nothing felt too noisy, and sunsets here were genuinely incredible.

Stay Here If:

  • You want balance
  • You want beach access without chaos
  • You’re traveling with family
  • You still want restaurants and nightlife nearby

Hotel We’d Recommend:

Paradox Resort Phuket

This resort surprised us.

It has a tropical island feel with palm trees, spacious grounds, and direct beach access, but still feels affordable compared to some luxury resorts nearby.

The location is excellent for exploring southern Phuket, and the atmosphere feels much more relaxed than staying in central Patong.

Phuket Old Town — Best for Culture, Cafés & Local Food

Most people don’t think about staying in Old Town.

But honestly? We think more people should.

If beaches aren’t your only priority, Phuket Old Town has some of the most personality on the island. Colorful streets, hidden cafés, boutique hotels, local markets, amazing food — it feels completely different from the resort-heavy beach areas.

It’s slower, more creative, and surprisingly charming.

Stay Here If:

  • You love café culture
  • You care about local food
  • You prefer culture over nightlife
  • You like boutique stays

Hotel We’d Recommend:

The Memory at On On Hotel

This hotel feels like part of Old Town itself.

Historic architecture, vintage interiors, beautiful design — staying here feels more personal than staying at a big resort. And because it’s located right in the middle of Old Town, you can walk almost everywhere.

Perfect if you want Phuket to feel more local and less touristy.

Kamala Beach — Best for Luxury & Quiet Escapes

Kamala feels calmer, cleaner, and more upscale than Patong.

This is where you come when you want Phuket sunsets, beach clubs, ocean-view villas, and peaceful mornings without crowds everywhere.

The entire area feels more refined and slower paced.

Stay Here If:

  • You want luxury
  • You want quiet beaches
  • You enjoy beach clubs & resorts
  • You’re avoiding party crowds

Hotel We’d Recommend:

InterContinental Phuket Resort by IHG

This is one of the most beautiful resorts we came across in Phuket.

The design is stunning, the beach feels exclusive, and the overall atmosphere feels peaceful from the moment you enter.

It’s expensive — but if you’re looking for a true luxury Phuket experience, this is probably one of the best areas to do it.

Final Thoughts

The truth is, there’s no single “best” area to stay in Phuket.

It completely depends on the kind of trip you want.

  • Want nightlife and energy? → Patong
  • Want relaxation and beaches? → Kata
  • Want balance? → Karon
  • Want culture and cafés? → Old Town
  • Want luxury and peace? → Kamala

That’s what makes Phuket interesting.

Every area feels like a slightly different version of the island.
