Penang isn't an island where everything revolves around one neighbourhood. Staying in the heart of George Town delivers a completely different experience from waking up beside the beaches of Batu Ferringhi or the waterfront cafés around Gurney.
After exploring the island, these are the areas we'd recommend depending on how you like to travel.
George Town
Best for: First-time visitors, food lovers, culture, walkability
If you're visiting Penang for the first time, this is where we'd stay every single time.
George Town has an energy that's difficult to replicate elsewhere on the island. UNESCO-listed heritage streets, colourful murals, colonial architecture, cafés, temples and some of Malaysia's best food are all within walking distance of one another.
One minute you're wandering through Armenian Street, the next you're sitting in a hidden café, before ending the evening with street food that locals have been eating for generations.
The biggest advantage is convenience.
Most of Penang's famous attractions are either within walking distance or only a short Grab ride away.
If your trip is only three or four days, staying here means spending more time exploring and less time travelling.

If George Town is Penang's cultural heart, Batu Ferringhi is where the island slows down.
Days here revolve around the beach rather than sightseeing.
You'll find long stretches of sand, resort pools, beachfront restaurants and sunsets that encourage you to stay outside just a little longer.
It's also one of the best places on the island for families, with plenty of resorts offering spacious rooms, kids' activities and direct beach access.
The only trade-off is location.
George Town is around 30–40 minutes away, so you'll probably make fewer trips into the city.

That can actually work in your favour.
The beaches are quieter, accommodation is generally better value, and you're close enough to reach either George Town or Batu Ferringhi within about 15–20 minutes.
If you prefer peaceful mornings over busy tourist areas, this is a lovely compromise.

If it were our first trip to Penang, we'd choose George Town.
Not because it has the fanciest hotels or the biggest beaches, but because it captures everything that makes Penang special.
You can spend the morning exploring colonial streets, stop for lunch at a family-run restaurant, visit temples in the afternoon, enjoy sunset by the waterfront and finish the evening at a hawker centre—all without feeling like you've spent the day commuting.
For longer holidays, we'd split our stay.
