Where to Stay in Mumbai: A Travey Club Guide
One thing we realized very quickly in Mumbai is that where you stay completely changes the kind of trip you’ll have.
Mumbai isn’t the type of city where you can stay “anywhere” and expect the same experience. Every neighborhood has its own personality — some feel historic and chaotic, some are polished and modern, while others are quieter and more local.
During our time exploring the city, we spent a lot of time moving between neighborhoods, and honestly, each area felt like a different version of Mumbai altogether.
So if you’re planning your first trip, here are the areas we genuinely think are worth staying in — along with hotels we’d personally recommend depending on your vibe and budget.
Colaba

Best for first-time travelers
If it’s your first time in Mumbai, we honestly think Colaba is the easiest and most enjoyable place to stay.
This area gives you immediate access to some of Mumbai’s biggest landmarks — Gateway of India, Kala Ghoda, Marine Drive, cafés, restaurants, and heritage streets — all within walking distance.
What we loved most here was the atmosphere. Early mornings feel peaceful near the sea, while evenings become lively with cafés, street shopping, and travelers wandering around.
It feels tourist-friendly without losing the real Mumbai energy.
Hotel We Recommend:
This is actually where we’d stay again ourselves.
It’s stylish without being overly expensive, centrally located, and perfect if you want to explore South Mumbai on foot. After long days exploring the city, returning to Colaba always felt convenient and comfortable.
Perfect for:
- First-time visitors
- Couples
- Travelers who want walkability
Bandra

Best for cafés, nightlife & modern Mumbai
Bandra feels completely different from South Mumbai.
It’s more creative, trendy, youthful, and relaxed. You’ll find boutique cafés, stylish restaurants, sea-facing promenades, street art, and a nightlife scene that feels much more modern compared to Colaba.
Some parts almost remind you of a European-style neighborhood mixed with Mumbai chaos.
We especially loved the evenings here.
Hotel We Recommend:
One of the best things about this hotel is the location itself.
You wake up overlooking the Arabian Sea, and Bandstand Promenade is right nearby. Sunset views here are genuinely beautiful, especially after spending the day inside Mumbai traffic.
Perfect for:
- Luxury travelers
- Couples
- Café & nightlife lovers
Fort & Kala Ghoda

Best for culture, heritage & slow travel
If you enjoy art galleries, old architecture, bookstores, cafés, and heritage neighborhoods, this area has a very different charm.
Walking through Kala Ghoda in the morning or late afternoon became one of our favorite parts of Mumbai. The streets feel quieter, more artistic, and somehow calmer than the rest of the city.
This is where Mumbai feels historic rather than hectic.
Hotel We Recommend:
Not flashy, but extremely well-located.
You’re close to cafés, galleries, CST, Colaba, and Marine Drive without paying luxury hotel prices. It’s a practical stay if your focus is exploring South Mumbai deeply.
Perfect for:
- Culture-focused travelers
- Solo travelers
- Heritage lovers
Juhu

Best for beach vibes & relaxed stays
Juhu feels slower compared to central Mumbai.
You’ll still feel the city’s energy, but the atmosphere here is more open and residential. The beach becomes especially lively in the evenings with street food stalls, families, locals, and sunset crowds.
It’s also a good option if you want easier airport access.
Hotel We Recommend:
This is one of those hotels where people sometimes end up spending more time at the property than outside.
The sea-facing rooms, pool area, and beach access make it ideal if you want a more relaxed Mumbai experience.
Perfect for:
- Families
- Luxury stays
- Relaxed vacations
Lower Parel

Best for modern luxury & nightlife
Lower Parel shows you Mumbai’s newer side — luxury towers, rooftop bars, fine dining, converted mill compounds, and stylish commercial spaces.
At night, this area feels energetic and upscale in a completely different way compared to South Mumbai.
If your version of travel includes cocktail bars, modern restaurants, and luxury city stays, this is where you’ll probably feel most comfortable.
Hotel We Recommend:
This is easily one of the most luxurious city hotels in Mumbai.
The skyline views at night are incredible, and the location works really well if you want to experience modern Mumbai rather than heritage Mumbai.
Perfect for:
- Luxury travelers
- Business travelers
- Nightlife & fine dining
Andheri

Best for budget + convenience
Andheri is practical.
It’s close to the airport, well-connected, and usually gives you better hotel value compared to South Mumbai. While it doesn’t have the same charm as Colaba or Bandra, it works well for shorter trips or travelers trying to balance comfort and budget.
Especially useful if you have early flights.
Hotel We Recommend:
The Fern Mumbai, Goregaon, Series by Marriott
Good balance between comfort, location, and pricing.
You won’t get “Mumbai charm” here in the same way, but you’ll get convenience — which honestly matters a lot in this city.
Perfect for:
- Short stays
- Budget-conscious travelers
- Business trips
So… Which Area Would We Personally Choose?
Honestly?
For a first Mumbai trip:
Colaba
It gives you the best overall experience:
- Walkability
- Heritage
- Food
- Sea views
- Café culture
- Access to major attractions
And somehow, it feels like the version of Mumbai most people imagine before arriving.
But if we were coming back for a second trip?
Probably Bandra.
The city feels slower there in the best possible way.
Final Thoughts
Mumbai is one of those cities where your hotel becomes more than just a place to sleep.
The traffic is real, distances are long, and every neighborhood feels different emotionally. Staying in the right area can completely change your experience of the city.
Some travelers will fall in love with the chaos of Colaba.
Others will prefer sunset walks in Bandra.
And some will never want to leave the luxury hotels overlooking the sea.
That’s the thing about Mumbai — there’s no single version of the city.
You just have to find the one that feels right for you.
