What to Eat in Phuket: The Foods We Still Can’t Stop Thinking About
One thing nobody tells you before visiting Phuket is this:
You’ll probably spend half the trip thinking about your next meal.
We went expecting beautiful beaches and island hopping, but somewhere between late-night street food stops, beachfront seafood dinners, and tiny local cafés hidden inside Old Town, Phuket quietly became one of our favorite food destinations in Thailand.
And honestly, the best meals weren’t always the fancy ones.
Sometimes it was a bowl of noodles from a crowded local restaurant with plastic chairs and zero air conditioning.
So if you’re heading to Phuket and wondering what’s actually worth eating, here are the dishes we genuinely loved — along with the restaurants we’d happily go back to again.
Crab Curry — The Dish Phuket Is Famous For

If there’s one dish that completely defines southern Thai food for us, it’s crab curry.
Rich, creamy, slightly spicy, and packed with flavor, Phuket-style crab curry feels comforting and intense at the same time. The kind of dish where everyone at the table suddenly becomes quiet because they’re too busy eating.
We tried it in a few places, but one restaurant genuinely stood out.

One Chun Café & Restaurant – Phuket Old Town
Walking into One Chun feels like stepping into an old Phuket home. Vintage décor, old-school music, locals eating with families — it feels authentic without trying too hard.
Their crab curry with rice is easily one of the best meals we had during the trip.
And yes, you’ll probably end up ordering extra rice.
Grilled Seafood by the Beach

Seafood in Phuket just tastes different.
Maybe it’s because everything is fresh, maybe it’s the ocean air, or maybe seafood simply tastes better when you’re sitting a few meters away from the beach with a cold drink in hand.
From giant prawns to grilled fish and lobster, Phuket does seafood ridiculously well.
Where to Try It:
Savoey Seafood Restaurant – Patong Beach
This became one of our favorite lunch spots during the trip.
The atmosphere is relaxed, portions are generous, and the grilled seafood platter is genuinely worth ordering. We especially loved the grilled prawns and steamed fish with lime and chili.
Go hungry.

Pad Thai From a Busy Local Spot

Pad Thai is one of those dishes that people assume is overrated until they eat a really good one in Thailand.
The balance of sweet, salty, sour, and smoky flavors somehow just works better here.
And honestly, the best version we had wasn’t from a luxury restaurant.
Where to Try It:
No.6 Restaurant – Patong
Tiny tables. Constant crowds. Fast service. Absolute chaos.
But the food?
Worth the wait.
Their Pad Thai tasted fresh, flavorful, and comforting after a long night exploring Bangla Road. It’s also surprisingly affordable considering how popular the place is.
This feels less like a tourist restaurant and more like a Phuket ritual at this point.
Mango Sticky Rice at a Night Market

You can’t leave Thailand without trying mango sticky rice properly.
And no — the airport version doesn’t count.
Fresh sweet mango, warm coconut sticky rice, creamy coconut sauce… somehow it’s simple and addictive at the same time.
We ended up eating it almost every night.
Where to Try It:
Sunday Walking Street Market – Phuket Old Town
This place feels alive.
Music, food stalls, colorful lights, people everywhere — and hidden between all of that are some incredible dessert vendors.
Grab a fresh mango sticky rice, walk slowly through the market, and just enjoy the atmosphere.
Honestly, it became one of our favorite parts of the evenings.
Authentic Southern Thai Curry

Southern Thai curries are not shy.
They’re spicy, bold, rich, and full of flavor.
And if you think you can handle spice… Phuket may humble you a little.
Where to Try It:
Blue Elephant Phuket
This was probably our “special dinner” meal during the trip.
The restaurant itself is beautiful, set inside a historic mansion, and the curries here feel more refined while still staying deeply authentic.
Their Massaman curry and southern-style seafood curry were unforgettable.
A little more expensive than local spots — but absolutely worth doing once.
Thai Milk Tea & Café Culture

One thing we didn’t expect in Phuket?
How many good cafés there are.
Especially around Phuket Old Town, café culture is huge. Tiny hidden coffee shops, vintage cafés, minimalist dessert spots — it’s impossible not to stop every few streets.
And after walking around in Phuket heat all day, Thai milk tea somehow tastes even better.
Where to Try It:
Campus Coffee Roaster – Phuket Old Town
Cool atmosphere, excellent coffee, and probably one of the best café breaks we had during the trip.
Perfect spot to slow down for an hour before exploring more of Old Town.
Rooftop Dinner & Cocktails With a View

Some meals are about food.
Others are about the entire atmosphere.
Watching the Phuket sunset while eating seafood and sipping cocktails on a rooftop somehow feels like the perfect way to end the trip.
Where to Try It:
Sunlique Rooftop Restaurant – Kata Area
We came here after sunset at Karon Viewpoint, and honestly, it ended up being one of the most memorable dinners of the trip.
The views, the breeze, the relaxed vibe — everything just felt right.
Order seafood, grab a cocktail, and take your time here.
No rushing.
Final Thoughts
The food in Phuket surprised us just as much as the beaches did.
One moment you’re eating grilled seafood by the ocean, the next you’re sitting in a tiny Old Town café drinking Thai tea while rain hits the streets outside.
That contrast is what makes Phuket special.
It’s not just a beach destination.
