How We Spent 3 Days in Bangkok

How We Spent 3 Days in Bangkok

Bangkok is one of those cities where you can do a lot in a short time—but only if you plan it right.

We recently mapped out a 3-day itinerary here, and the biggest takeaway wasn’t just what to do… it was how much easier everything becomes when you stay in the right area.

So instead of giving you a rigid plan, here’s how we actually approached Bangkok over three days—and what made it work.

First Things First: Where to Stay

Before anything else—this matters.

We stayed near the Riverside (around ICONSIAM area), and honestly, it made the entire trip smoother.

Why?

  • You can use boats to reach temples (faster than cars)
  • You’re close to major sights without being stuck in traffic
  • Evenings are calmer compared to central Bangkok
  • Everything still feels connected

If we had to recommend one base:
Riverside / ICONSIAM area (Hilton Garden Inn Bangkok Riverside is a solid choice)

It’s not flashy, but it just works.

Day 1 – Temples, River & Slowing Down

We started with the obvious—the temples.

Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun.

But here’s the difference: instead of rushing, we actually took our time (and having a guide helped more than we expected). You don’t just see temples—you understand them.

The best part of the day?

Not the temples.
The river crossing.

Taking a small ferry across the Chao Phraya felt like one of those simple moments that stays with you. No traffic, just water, temples, and the city skyline.

After that, we did something we now consider essential:
Thai massage in the afternoon

It breaks the day perfectly.

And then we ended with a dinner cruise.

Not something we’d usually prioritize—but it turned out to be the most relaxed part of the day. No walking, no planning, just sit and watch Bangkok light up.

Day 2 – Markets, Views & Energy

Day 2 felt completely different.

We started at Chatuchak Market, and honestly, you don’t “cover” this place—you just walk and let it happen.

One minute you’re shopping, next minute you’re eating something random, and somehow you lose track of time.

We came back for a short rest (important), and then headed out again.

Mahanakhon Skywalk at sunset

Seeing Bangkok from above gives you perspective—it’s endless.

Then came something unexpected:
Muay Thai fight

We thought we’d watch for an hour and leave.
We stayed the whole time.

The atmosphere pulls you in—it’s not just sport, it’s culture.

And of course, we ended the night at:
Khao San Road

It’s chaotic, loud, and a bit messy—but also fun in a way that feels very “Bangkok.”

Day 3 – Step Outside the City

On the last day, we left Bangkok.

Ayutthaya

This was probably the calmest part of the trip.

Ancient ruins, open spaces, slower pace—it feels like a completely different world compared to the city.

It’s not rushed, and that’s why it works.

By the time we got back, we didn’t want anything intense—just a relaxed dinner and an early night.

What Made This Itinerary Work

Looking back, it wasn’t just the places.

It was:

  • Not overpacking mornings
  • Adding breaks (especially Day 1 & 2)
  • Mixing high-energy + slow moments
  • And most importantly… where we stayed

Final Thought

Bangkok can feel overwhelming if you try to do too much.

But if you:

  • stay somewhere well-connected (Riverside works best)
  • plan your days with some breathing room
  • and don’t rush every experience

…it becomes one of the most rewarding cities to explore.

3 days is just enough to get a real feel for it.

Not everything—but enough to want to come back.
