Heraklion, Crete: The Perfect 3-Day Signature Itinerary

Heraklion is often the first place travellers arrive when visiting Crete, but many leave before discovering what makes it special. It's easy to think of the city as simply a gateway to the island, yet spend a few days here and you'll uncover a destination where Europe's oldest civilisation, Venetian architecture, incredible food and relaxed Mediterranean living come together beautifully.

What we enjoy most about Heraklion is its balance. You can walk through a 4,000-year-old palace in the morning, enjoy a long Cretan lunch in the afternoon, watch fishing boats drift across the harbour at sunset and finish the evening on a rooftop overlooking the sea.

This three-day itinerary is designed for travellers who want to experience the city's highlights without feeling rushed.

Where to Stay

For a three-day visit, we recommend staying around the Venetian Harbour and Old Town.

It places you within walking distance of Heraklion's main attractions, excellent restaurants, the Archaeological Museum, Lion Square and the waterfront. You'll also have easy access to taxis and organised tours heading to Knossos Palace and other parts of Crete.

Our preferred hotel is GDM Megaron Historical Monument Hotel, which combines elegant rooms with one of the city's best harbourfront locations. Returning here after a full day of exploring feels like part of the experience rather than simply heading back to your accommodation.

Day 1 – Discover the Heart of Heraklion

Begin your first morning with a leisurely breakfast before setting out into the Old Town.

The best way to experience Heraklion is on foot. Wander through the narrow streets until you reach Lion Square, where the beautiful Morosini Fountain has been the city's gathering place for centuries. Rather than rushing through, spend some time exploring the surrounding lanes, stopping whenever a café or local shop catches your attention.

From there, make your way to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. The museum provides remarkable insight into the Minoan civilisation and perfectly prepares you for visiting Knossos the following day. The Phaistos Disc, colourful frescoes and beautifully preserved artefacts make this one of Greece's finest museums.

For lunch, settle into Peskesi, one of Heraklion's best restaurants for authentic Cretan cuisine. Local cheeses, seasonal vegetables, fresh olive oil and traditional recipes offer a genuine introduction to the island's culinary heritage.

Later in the afternoon, stroll towards the Venetian Harbour. Walk along the waterfront before exploring Koules Fortress, where panoramic views stretch across the harbour and the Cretan Sea.

As evening arrives, enjoy dinner at Parasties, where grilled meats, local wine and traditional flavours provide a relaxed introduction to Crete's hospitality.

Day 2 – Ancient Wonders and Local Life

Start the day with breakfast before heading to Knossos Palace, located just outside the city centre.

Walking through Europe's oldest city is one of those experiences that stays with you long after you leave. The reconstructed columns, ceremonial courtyards and fascinating mythology surrounding King Minos and the Minotaur bring the ancient Minoan civilisation vividly to life.

After returning to Heraklion, enjoy lunch at Amalias Kitchen, where modern Mediterranean cuisine offers a lighter contrast to the morning's historical exploration.

Spend the afternoon wandering through 1866 Street, Dedalou Street and the surrounding pedestrian lanes. This part of the city feels wonderfully authentic, with artisan shops, local markets and cafés creating a relaxed atmosphere that's ideal for unhurried exploration.

Before sunset, visit Rocca a Mare (Koules Fortress) if you haven't fully explored its interior, or simply return to the harbour to enjoy the changing colours over the water.

Finish the day with dinner at Herb's Garden, one of Heraklion's finest rooftop restaurants. Looking across the harbour while enjoying fresh seafood and local wine is a fitting way to end another day in Crete.

Day 3 – Discover Coastal Crete

Your final day is the perfect opportunity to venture beyond the city.

A full-day tour to Spinalonga, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos showcases a completely different side of Crete.

Spinalonga's fascinating history as a Venetian fortress and former leper colony offers a moving and memorable experience, while the boat cruise through the Gulf of Elounda provides opportunities to swim in remarkably clear water and enjoy a relaxed barbecue lunch.

Later, wander through the elegant waterfront town of Agios Nikolaos, where cafés line the edge of Lake Voulismeni and the atmosphere feels effortlessly relaxed.

Back in Heraklion, celebrate your final evening with dinner at Plani, a refined restaurant overlooking the harbour. Fresh seafood, local wine and a slower Mediterranean pace provide the perfect farewell to Crete.
