Chennai in 3 Days: A Travey Club Signature Itinerary
Chennai is often described as the cultural capital of South India, but that only tells part of the story. During our time exploring the city, we discovered a destination that blends centuries-old temples, colonial landmarks, vibrant food culture, coastal beauty, and modern luxury in a way that feels uniquely Chennai.
Unlike some cities that reveal themselves immediately, Chennai unfolds gradually. A morning at a historic temple can be followed by filter coffee in a bustling neighborhood, an afternoon exploring colonial history, and an evening watching the sunset along the Bay of Bengal. Three days is enough to experience the city's highlights while still allowing time to appreciate its character and rhythm.
If you're visiting Chennai for the first time, here's how we would spend three memorable days in the city.
Where to Stay for Easy Access to Everything

If your goal is to explore Chennai efficiently while enjoying a premium experience, MRC Nagar is the ideal base.
Located along the waterfront, MRC Nagar sits between many of Chennai's most important attractions. From here, Mylapore, Marina Beach, San Thome Basilica, Besant Nagar, and central Chennai are all within convenient driving distance. The area also offers a quieter atmosphere compared to the city's busier commercial districts.
Recommended Hotel: The Leela Palace Chennai
For a Signature Chennai experience, The Leela Palace remains our preferred choice. The hotel's coastal location, luxurious rooms, exceptional dining options, and central positioning make it one of the most convenient and rewarding places to stay in the city.
Day 1: Chennai's Coastal Heritage

Begin your journey at Marina Beach, one of the longest urban beaches in the world. The promenade offers an excellent introduction to Chennai's coastal identity and provides a glimpse into local life as families, walkers, and vendors gather along the shoreline.
Afterward, head to Ratna Cafe, a Chennai institution famous for its iconic sambar idli. This simple yet legendary meal has become an essential part of the city's culinary story.
The afternoon is best spent exploring San Thome Basilica, one of the few churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle. The striking white structure stands as a reminder of Chennai's multicultural and colonial heritage.
Later, enjoy a relaxed break at Writer's Cafe before visiting Vivekananda House, where exhibitions offer insight into the life and teachings of one of India's most influential spiritual leaders.
End the day with a seafood dinner at Meenavan Unavagam, where Chennai's connection to the Bay of Bengal is reflected in every dish.
Day 2: Culture, Traditions, and Local Life

The second day begins at Kapaleeshwarar Temple, one of Chennai's most important religious and architectural landmarks. The colorful gopuram, intricate carvings, and active worship create a fascinating cultural experience.
From there, continue with a Mylapore Heritage Walk. This part of the city quickly became one of our favorite areas in Chennai. The flower markets, temple streets, traditional shops, and everyday local life provide an authentic glimpse into the city's cultural heart.
A stop for traditional filter coffee adds another layer to the experience. Served in a classic stainless-steel tumbler, Chennai's filter coffee culture is something every visitor should experience at least once.
After lunch, head to Guindy National Park, a rare urban national park that offers a refreshing contrast to the city's busy streets.
As the afternoon transitions into evening, make your way to Elliot's Beach in Besant Nagar. The atmosphere here feels relaxed and welcoming, making it one of the best places in Chennai to unwind.
Finish the day with dinner at Murugan Idli Shop, where classic South Indian dishes continue to attract loyal diners from across the city.
Day 3: History, Literature, and Chennai's Legacy

The final day focuses on Chennai's historical and cultural foundations.
Start with breakfast at The Verandah at Taj Connemara before exploring the Government Museum in Egmore. The museum's bronze collection and archaeological exhibits provide valuable context for understanding Tamil Nadu's rich heritage.
Continue to Fort St. George, where Chennai's colonial story began. The fort remains one of the city's most historically significant landmarks and offers fascinating insight into the early years of British India.
For lunch, experience traditional South Indian non-vegetarian cuisine at Nair Mess, a long-standing favorite among locals.
The afternoon introduces another side of Chennai through Valluvar Kottam, a monument dedicated to the celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. The impressive stone chariot structure serves as both a cultural and literary landmark.
A leisurely walk through Semmozhi Poonga offers a welcome pause before the evening.
Conclude your Chennai journey with dinner at Southern Spice, one of the city's finest restaurants. The menu showcases the diversity of South Indian cuisine and provides a fitting finale to three days of exploration.
