Best Areas to Stay in Guangzhou, China
Guangzhou is one of those cities where your hotel location completely changes the kind of trip you’ll have.
Some areas feel futuristic and fast-paced, surrounded by skyscrapers and luxury malls, while others feel older, slower, and deeply connected to Cantonese culture. During our time here, we realized there isn’t one “best” area to stay—only the area that matches the experience you want from the city.
Here are the neighborhoods we genuinely think are worth considering, along with the hotels we’d personally recommend in each one.
Tianhe District — Best for First-Time Visitors & Comfort

If it’s your first time in Guangzhou, Tianhe is the easiest area to base yourself. It’s modern, well-connected, safe, and filled with malls, restaurants, cafés, and some of the city’s most recognizable skyline views. Even though it’s busy during the day, parts of Tianhe still feel surprisingly calm once you return to your hotel at night.
This is also where Guangzhou feels most international. You’ll find luxury shopping, rooftop bars, and easy metro access to almost everywhere in the city.
Where We’d Stay:
Four Points® by Sheraton Guangzhou Financial City, Tianhe
This hotel feels slightly removed from the chaos of central Tianhe, which honestly becomes a huge advantage after long days exploring the city. The rooms are comfortable, the mornings feel quiet, and breakfast here gives you a surprisingly good introduction to Cantonese flavors without leaving the hotel.
Liwan District — Best for Old Guangzhou & Food Culture

Liwan was probably the area that felt most memorable to us personally.
This is the Guangzhou of old arcades, hidden alleyways, traditional Cantonese restaurants, herbal tea shops, and streets that feel unchanged for decades. Staying here feels less polished and modern—but far more atmospheric. At night, the area around Shangxiajiu becomes incredibly lively without feeling overwhelming.
If your trip revolves around food, culture, and experiencing the older side of Guangzhou, this is easily one of the best places to stay.
Where We’d Stay:
White Swan Hotel
Set beside Shamian Island and the Pearl River, this hotel balances luxury with history beautifully. The views are stunning, the service feels refined without being overly formal, and the location gives you easy access to both the cultural side of Guangzhou and some of the city’s best food streets.
Zhujiang New Town — Best for Luxury & Skyline Views

If you want the modern version of Guangzhou, this is it.
Zhujiang New Town feels futuristic in the best way possible—glass skyscrapers, designer malls, luxury restaurants, rooftop lounges, and wide streets glowing beneath the Canton Tower skyline. At night especially, this part of the city almost feels cinematic.
It’s more polished than traditional, but if you enjoy luxury hotels and modern city energy, this area is hard to beat.
Where We’d Stay:
Four Seasons Guangzhou
Honestly, this is one of the most impressive city hotels we’ve experienced in China. The views alone are unforgettable. Waking up above the skyline and watching the city light up at night from your room feels like part of the trip itself. It’s expensive, yes—but for a special stay in Guangzhou, it’s worth considering.
Final Thoughts
The truth is, Guangzhou isn’t really a city you visit for just one thing. It’s the contrast that makes it special—the old streets and futuristic skylines, quiet tea houses and crowded night markets, peaceful riverside walks and fast-moving city energy.
And where you stay shapes how you experience all of it.
If you want convenience and balance, stay in Tianhe. If you want culture and food, choose Liwan. And if you want modern luxury and skyline views, Zhujiang New Town is where Guangzhou feels its most dramatic.
