Where We’d Actually Stay in Hong Kong (and Why It Matters More Than You Think)

Where We’d Actually Stay in Hong Kong (and Why It Matters More Than You Think)

When we were planning Hong Kong, we initially thought—a hotel is just a place to sleep, right?

Wrong.

Where you stay here completely changes how you experience the city. Hong Kong isn’t spread out in the usual way—it’s layered. Some areas are fast and chaotic, some are polished and calm, and some sit right in between.

After spending time moving around, here’s how we’d actually choose where to stay—depending on the kind of trip you want.

Mong Kok – If you want to feel the real energy of the city

This is where we stayed—and honestly, it felt like being dropped straight into the heartbeat of Hong Kong.

Step outside, and you’re immediately surrounded by neon lights, street food, markets, and people everywhere. It’s loud, crowded, and a little overwhelming at first—but that’s also what makes it exciting. You don’t have to “go out exploring” here—you’re already in it.

Where we’d stay: Cordis, Hong Kong
It’s right in the middle of everything, but the moment you step inside, it’s calm, modern, and comfortable. The rooftop pool is a huge plus after a long day, and the rooms give you that quiet break from the chaos outside.

Best for: First-time visitors, food lovers, people who want action right outside their door.

Tsim Sha Tsui – For skyline views and easy sightseeing

If Mong Kok feels intense, Tsim Sha Tsui feels more balanced.

You still get the buzz, but it’s more open, more scenic. The harbourfront is right there, and walking along the Avenue of Stars at night with the skyline in front of you is one of those moments that just sticks.

It’s also super convenient—you’re connected to everything.

Where we’d stay: The Langham, Hong Kong
It’s elegant without feeling over-the-top, and the location is perfect. You can walk to the waterfront, hop on the ferry, or explore nearby streets easily. It feels like a more refined base without losing the city vibe.

Best for: Couples, first-time trips, people who want convenience + views.

Central / SoHo – If you want a more polished, lifestyle feel

This is a completely different side of Hong Kong.

Instead of markets and street stalls, you get cafés, bars, art spaces, and a more “lifestyle” atmosphere. It feels international, a bit more relaxed, and great if you enjoy walking around without a fixed plan.

We didn’t stay here, but every time we passed through, it felt like a place you could settle into.

Where we’d stay: The Upper House
It’s quiet, minimal, and feels almost like a retreat above the city. Large rooms, great service, and a very calm energy—perfect if you don’t want the constant rush of the streets.

Best for: Luxury travelers, couples, people who prefer calm over chaos.

The Peak / Mid-Levels – For something quieter and more exclusive

Most people come up to the Peak just for the view—but staying nearby gives you a completely different perspective.

It’s quieter, less crowded, and feels removed from the busy parts of the city. You don’t get the constant buzz—but that’s kind of the point.

Where we’d stay: Island Shangri-La
It’s luxurious, comfortable, and offers incredible views. After a long day out, coming back here feels like a proper reset.

Best for: Families, luxury stays, travelers who want space and calm.

Lantau Island – If you want something slow and different

This is the side of Hong Kong most people don’t expect.

Less skyscrapers, more nature, quieter villages, slower pace. If you’re planning to spend time around Tai O or the Big Buddha, staying here can actually make sense.

We didn’t stay overnight here—but if we had more time, we would’ve considered it just for the contrast.

Where we’d stay: Auberge Discovery Bay
It’s peaceful, scenic, and feels like a proper escape from the city.

Best for: Longer trips, second-time visitors, slow travel.

Final Thoughts (what we’d do differently)

If we had to choose again?

We’d still stay in Mong Kok for the experience
But maybe split the stay with 1 night somewhere quieter

Because Hong Kong isn’t just one kind of city—it’s multiple experiences layered together.

Where you stay decides which version you see the most.
