Where to Stay in Prague: The Best Areas & Hotels for Every Travel Style

Choosing where to stay in Prague can completely shape your experience of the city.

At first, Prague feels compact enough that location doesn’t matter too much. But after spending several days walking through different neighborhoods, we realized every area has its own personality, rhythm, and atmosphere.

Some parts of Prague feel straight out of a medieval fairytale. Others feel local, artistic, elegant, or surprisingly modern. And honestly, where you stay determines which version of Prague you’ll fall in love with.

During our trip, we explored multiple neighborhoods while trying to understand what type of traveler each area suits best. Here are the places we genuinely think are worth considering — along with hotels we’d personally recommend in each.

Old Town (Staré Město) — Best for First-Time Visitors

If it’s your first time in Prague, Old Town is hard to beat.

This is the Prague most people imagine:

  • cobblestone streets,
  • Gothic towers,
  • hidden alleys,
  • historic cafés,
  • and landmarks around almost every corner.

We stayed here ourselves, and honestly, the biggest luxury wasn’t the hotel — it was being able to walk almost everywhere. Early mornings felt magical before the crowds arrived, while evenings became unexpectedly romantic once the city quieted down.

The only downside? It can get busy during the day.

But if convenience matters to you, this area is unbeatable.

Recommended Hotel:

Cloister Inn

This hotel surprised us in the best way.

It’s tucked into a quieter street within Old Town, so you stay central without dealing with constant tourist noise. The rooms are simple but spacious, and the location makes Prague incredibly easy to explore on foot.

What we loved most was returning after long days and still feeling slightly removed from the chaos outside.

Perfect for:
First-time visitors, couples, relaxed city exploration.

Malá Strana (Lesser Town) — Best for Romantic & Scenic Stays

If Old Town is Prague’s energetic heart, Malá Strana feels like its softer, quieter side.

Located beneath Prague Castle on the west bank of the river, this area feels slower and more atmospheric. You’ll find:

  • pastel-colored buildings,
  • hidden gardens,
  • quiet courtyards,
  • Baroque architecture,
  • and beautiful riverside walks.

Walking here at night genuinely felt cinematic.

This is the area we’d recommend for travelers who want Prague to feel more intimate and less tourist-heavy.

Recommended Hotel:

Hotel Pod Vezi

Few hotels in Prague have a location this good.

You’re right beside Charles Bridge, but somehow the atmosphere still feels calm and local. The rooms blend historic charm with modern comfort, and waking up near the bridge before the crowds arrive is honestly unforgettable.

Perfect for:
Couples, honeymoon trips, slower-paced travelers.

New Town (Nové Město) — Best for Cafés, Shopping & Modern Prague

New Town feels very different from Old Town — and that contrast is actually refreshing.

The streets are wider, the atmosphere feels more modern, and daily life becomes more visible here. You’ll find:

  • shopping streets,
  • trendy cafés,
  • local restaurants,
  • nightlife,
  • and easier public transport access.

It still feels central, but less “storybook Prague” and more lived-in Prague.

We especially enjoyed this area during the mornings while café hopping between places like EMA Espresso Bar and Café Louvre.

Recommended Hotel:

Mosaic House Design Hotel

This hotel feels modern, stylish, and surprisingly peaceful for such a central location.

It attracts a mix of travelers — digital nomads, couples, and younger visitors looking for a more contemporary Prague experience. The design feels fresh without becoming overly trendy.

The location also makes it easy to explore both New Town and Old Town on foot.

Perfect for:
Food lovers, younger travelers, café culture, nightlife.

Vinohrady — Best for Local Vibes & Long Stays

If we stayed longer in Prague, this is probably where we’d choose to live.

Vinohrady feels residential, elegant, and genuinely local. The city slows down here. You’ll find:

  • tree-lined streets,
  • wine bars,
  • local bakeries,
  • parks,
  • and fewer tourists overall.

It feels more like “real Prague.”

This area isn’t about sightseeing convenience — it’s about atmosphere and quality of life.

Recommended Hotel:

Le Palais Art Hotel Prague

Quiet, elegant, and slightly removed from the tourist crowds.

The hotel itself feels refined without being overly formal. After busy sightseeing days, returning to a calmer neighborhood like Vinohrady feels surprisingly relaxing.

Perfect for:
Longer stays, repeat visitors, travelers seeking local experiences.

Prague Castle Area / Hradčany — Best for Quiet Luxury

This area feels grand, peaceful, and almost cinematic.

Because fewer people stay here overnight, mornings and evenings feel incredibly calm once day tourists leave. You’re surrounded by historic buildings, castle views, and quiet streets that almost feel frozen in time.

The tradeoff is that it’s less lively late at night.

But for travelers wanting elegance and tranquility, it’s beautiful.

Recommended Hotel:

Alchymist Prague Castle Suites Hotel

This feels less like a hotel and more like staying inside a historic European residence.

Everything about it feels intimate and luxurious without being flashy. The atmosphere suits Prague perfectly — romantic, quiet, and timeless.

Perfect for:
Luxury travelers, anniversaries, quiet escapes.

Final Thoughts

The interesting thing about Prague is that there isn’t really a “wrong” area to stay in.

The city changes personality every few streets, and each neighborhood offers a completely different experience:

  • Old Town gives you iconic Prague.
  • Malá Strana gives you romantic Prague.
  • New Town gives you modern Prague.
  • Vinohrady gives you local Prague.
  • Hradčany gives you peaceful Prague.

No matter where you stay, Prague somehow finds a way to slow you down — in the best possible way.
