Where to Stay in New York City: The Best Areas & Hotels from Travey Club
Choosing where to stay in New York City can honestly feel overwhelming at first.
Every neighborhood seems famous for something different. Some areas are packed with energy and nightlife, while others feel calmer, more local, and surprisingly peaceful despite being in one of the busiest cities in the world.
During our time in NYC, one thing became very clear: where you stay completely shapes your experience of the city.
The right hotel can make New York feel exciting and effortless. The wrong location can leave you spending half your trip inside taxis and subways.
So instead of just listing random hotels, we wanted to share the areas that genuinely make sense depending on the kind of trip you want — along with hotels we’d personally recommend staying at.
Midtown Manhattan

Best for: First-time visitors, convenience, iconic NYC energy
If it’s your first time in New York, Midtown honestly makes life so much easier.
You’re close to Times Square, Broadway, Fifth Avenue, subway connections, restaurants, and major attractions — which means less time commuting and more time actually enjoying the city.
Yes, it’s busy. Yes, it’s touristy. But there’s also something exciting about stepping outside your hotel at night and instantly being surrounded by glowing skyscrapers and the nonstop energy NYC is famous for.
Recommended Hotel: The Westin New York at Times Square
This ended up being one of the best decisions of our trip.
The location is incredibly practical without feeling too chaotic. After long days exploring the city, coming back to comfortable rooms and quieter interiors made a huge difference.
What we loved most was the balance:
- Close enough to experience Times Square
- Far enough to still relax properly at night
For a first NYC trip, it’s honestly hard to go wrong here.
Upper East Side

Best for: Relaxed stays, museums, quieter luxury
The Upper East Side feels like a completely different version of New York.
Instead of giant crowds and flashing billboards, you get tree-lined streets, elegant buildings, cozy cafés, and a slower rhythm that feels surprisingly calming.
This area is perfect if you:
- Love museums
- Want a more refined atmosphere
- Prefer peaceful mornings over nightlife
Walking around here in the morning genuinely felt relaxing — especially near Central Park and Madison Avenue.
Recommended Hotel: The Mark Hotel
The Mark feels luxurious in that understated New York way.
Elegant interiors, exceptional service, and one of the best Upper East Side locations make it ideal if you want a quieter, more sophisticated NYC experience.
It’s expensive, but if you’re looking for a premium stay in Manhattan without Midtown chaos, this area is incredible.
Brooklyn (DUMBO / Williamsburg)

Best for: Creative vibes, skyline views, local atmosphere
Brooklyn surprised us more than anywhere else.
It feels more relaxed, artistic, and residential compared to Manhattan, but still incredibly vibrant. The cafés, converted warehouse spaces, independent stores, and skyline views create a very different kind of New York experience.
DUMBO especially feels cinematic at sunset.
If you want:
- Better skyline views
- Trendier cafés
- Less tourist-heavy surroundings
- A more “local NYC” feeling
…Brooklyn is a fantastic choice.
Recommended Hotel: 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge
This hotel is genuinely stunning.
The views of Manhattan from here are unreal, especially at night. The design feels modern and natural, with huge windows and rooftop spaces that make you want to stay in the hotel longer than planned.
Waking up here with the skyline outside your window feels very special.
Times Square / Theater District

Best for: Broadway lovers, nightlife, nonstop energy
This area is loud, crowded, bright, and overwhelming.
And honestly? That’s part of the charm.
If you’re planning to:
- Watch Broadway shows
- Stay out late
- Experience iconic NYC energy
- Be in the middle of everything
…this is where you’ll probably have the most fun.
It’s not the most peaceful area in the city, but the convenience is unbeatable.
Recommended Hotel: citizenM Times Square
This hotel feels modern, efficient, and surprisingly stylish for the price point.
The rooms are compact (very NYC), but the rooftop lounge and location make up for it completely.
Perfect for travelers who care more about experiencing the city than spending all day inside the hotel.
SoHo & Greenwich Village

Best for: Food lovers, cafés, shopping, local NYC charm
If we had to choose the neighborhood that “felt” most like the New York you imagine from movies, it would probably be this area.
SoHo and Greenwich Village are full of:
- Brownstone streets
- Stylish cafés
- Boutique shopping
- Small restaurants
- People casually walking dogs with coffee in hand
It feels personal and lived-in compared to Midtown.
This is the kind of area where the best moments happen unexpectedly — wandering into bookstores, finding tiny cafés, or simply sitting in Washington Square Park people-watching.
Recommended Hotel: The Marlton Hotel
The Marlton feels intimate, cozy, and full of character.
The rooms aren’t huge, but the atmosphere is what makes the hotel memorable. Staying here makes you feel connected to the neighborhood instead of isolated from it.
Perfect for travelers who care more about vibe and experience than flashy luxury.
Hudson Yards

Best for: Luxury stays, modern NYC, skyline experiences
Hudson Yards feels like the futuristic side of New York.
The buildings are sleek, the restaurants are upscale, and everything feels polished and modern. Some travelers love it, while others feel it lacks the older NYC character — but for luxury stays, it’s hard to deny how impressive the area is.
It’s also ideal if you want easy access to:
- The High Line
- Observation decks
- Luxury shopping
- Fine dining
Recommended Hotel: Equinox Hotel New York
This is probably one of the most wellness-focused luxury hotels in the city.
Everything feels intentionally designed around comfort and recovery — which honestly matters more in NYC than people realize.
After walking 20,000+ steps a day, returning to a calm luxury hotel like this feels incredible.
Final Thoughts
The best area to stay in New York really depends on the kind of experience you want.
If it’s your first trip:
Midtown is the easiest and most practical.
If you want charm and local atmosphere:
SoHo or Greenwich Village are hard to beat.
If you care about skyline views and trendy energy:
Brooklyn is unforgettable.
And if you want luxury and convenience:
Hudson Yards and the Upper East Side are excellent choices.
What surprised us most about New York is how dramatically the atmosphere changes from one neighborhood to another. Staying in different parts of the city can almost feel like visiting entirely different destinations.
That’s part of what makes NYC so addictive — there’s never just one version of the city.
