What We Ate in London (And Where You Should Too)

What We Ate in London (And Where You Should Too)

Let’s be honest—London doesn’t always get the best reputation when it comes to food.

But after spending a few days eating our way through the city, we can confidently say: that reputation is outdated.

London is one of the most diverse food cities in the world, and if you know where to go (and what to order), you’re in for a seriously good time. Here’s what we tried—and what we’d absolutely go back for.

Fish & Chips (Because You Have To)

We couldn’t come to London and not start here.

There’s something oddly satisfying about crispy battered fish, chunky chips, and way too much tartar sauce. It’s simple, but when it’s done right, it hits.

Where we went: Poppies Fish & Chips (Spitalfields)
It has that old-school vibe, and the fish was perfectly flaky without being greasy. Worth it.

Steak & Ale Pie (Comfort Food Done Right)

This one surprised us.

We expected something heavy—and yes, it is—but in the best possible way. Rich, slow-cooked beef inside a buttery crust… it’s basically a warm hug after a long day of walking.

Where we went: The Churchill Arms (Kensington)
Also one of the most unique pubs we’ve seen—covered in flowers outside and full of character inside.

Indian Curry (London Does It Better Than You Think)

London’s Indian food scene is on another level.

We ended up in Brick Lane (which is basically curry central), and honestly, picking a place felt overwhelming—but also exciting.

Where we went: Dishoom (Shoreditch)
Yes, it’s popular—but for good reason. The black daal alone is worth going for.

A Proper English Breakfast

This is not your light, “grab-and-go” kind of breakfast.

Eggs, sausages, baked beans, mushrooms, toast—it’s a full commitment. But if you’ve got a big day ahead, it sets you up nicely.

Where we went: The Breakfast Club (Soho)
Busy, a bit chaotic, but that’s part of the charm. And the portions? Generous.

Cheese Toasties at Borough Market

We didn’t plan to eat this. We just followed the smell.

And suddenly we were standing there, holding what might be the best grilled cheese we’ve ever had.

Where we went: Kappacasein Dairy (Borough Market)
Crispy, cheesy, slightly messy—exactly how it should be.

Street Food (Go Wherever the Crowd Is)

One thing we learned quickly: if there’s a queue in London, it’s usually a good sign.

From bao buns to fresh pasta to international fusion, the street food scene here is insane.

Where we went: Camden Market
It’s chaotic, loud, and packed—but the variety is unbeatable. Go with an open mind (and an empty stomach).

Afternoon Tea (A Slower Moment)

We almost skipped this—but we’re glad we didn’t.

After days of walking, sitting down for tea, tiny sandwiches, and pastries felt… kind of luxurious. And very London.

Where we went: Sketch (Mayfair)
A bit on the pricier side, but the setting is beautiful and the experience feels special.

A Solid Burger (Because Balance)

Not everything has to be traditional.

Sometimes, after a long day, you just want something familiar—and London does comfort food really well too.

Where we went: Patty & Bun (Soho)
Simple menu, big flavours, no fuss. Exactly what we needed that night.

Final Thoughts from Travey Club

If there’s one thing we’d tell anyone visiting London—it’s this:

Come hungry.

Because the food here isn’t just about ticking off “must-try” dishes. It’s about exploring cultures, neighbourhoods, and little pockets of the city you might otherwise miss.

Some of our best memories weren’t at landmarks—they were sitting at small tables, trying something new, and saying, “okay… that was actually amazing.”

And that’s what travel should feel like.
