What We Actually Ate in Bangkok

What We Actually Ate in Bangkok

One thing we didn’t fully understand before going to Bangkok?

You don’t just eat there—you plan your day around food.

Some of our best moments weren’t at landmarks or viewpoints… they were sitting on small plastic chairs, in air-conditioned cafes, or at random street corners, eating something that completely surprised us.

So instead of giving you a generic food list, here’s what we actually loved eating in Bangkok—and exactly where we’d go back for each one.

Pad Thai (Yes, It’s Worth the Hype)

We’ll be honest—we thought Pad Thai would be overrated.

It wasn’t.

The balance of sweet, tangy, and smoky flavors when it’s done right is just… different.

Where to go: Thip Samai Pad Thai
This place is famous for a reason. Slightly touristy, yes—but the flavor and consistency make it worth it.

What to order: Pad Thai with shrimp + fresh orange juice

Tom Yum Soup (Spicy, Sour, Addictive)

This is the dish that wakes you up.

Hot, tangy, full of herbs—and way more complex than it looks.

Where to go: Pe Aor Tom Yum Goong
Not fancy, but the soup is packed with flavor and generous seafood.

What to expect: It’s spicy. Don’t underestimate it.

Thai Green Curry (Comfort Food, Thai Style)

After a long day of walking, this is what we kept coming back to.

Creamy, rich, slightly spicy—perfect with rice.

Where to go: J’s Restaurant Thatien
Right near the temples, super convenient, and honestly one of our most satisfying meals.

What to order: Green curry + rice + a cold Thai iced tea

Street Grilled Skewers (The Underrated Winner)

This is where Bangkok really shines.

You don’t plan for it—you just see a stall, smell something amazing, and stop.

Where to go: Khao San Road (evening)
Walk around and pick a busy stall (that’s always a good sign).

What to try:

  • Grilled pork skewers
  • Chicken satay
  • BBQ seafood

Best part: cheap, fast, and surprisingly good

Mango Sticky Rice (Non-Negotiable)

We tried this on Day 1… and then again on Day 2… and Day 3.

Sweet mango, coconut rice, creamy sauce—it just works.

Where to go: Mae Varee Mango Sticky Rice
One of the most consistent places in the city.

Tip: Eat it fresh. It makes a difference.

Dim Sum (When You Want a Break from Thai Food)

At some point, you might want something different—and Bangkok does this really well too.

Where to go: Kowloon Diner
We went here on our last evening and it felt like a reset.

What to order:

  • Xiaolongbao
  • Shrimp dumplings
  • BBQ pork rice rolls

Vibe: casual, cozy, and a nice change from street food

Coconut Ice Cream (Perfect Midday Break)

Walking through Chatuchak Market, this saved us.

Cold, creamy, slightly nutty—and served in a coconut shell.

Where to go: Chatuchak Weekend Market
You’ll see multiple stalls—pick one with a crowd.

Add-ons: peanuts, sticky rice, coconut jelly

Thai Milk Tea (You’ll End Up Drinking It Daily)

Strong, sweet, and somehow always refreshing—even in the heat.

Where to go: Anywhere, honestly
But we loved grabbing it inside markets or small cafes.

Tip: Ask for less sugar if you prefer it lighter

Crab Fried Rice (Simple but So Good)

This one surprised us.

Light, fragrant, and full of flavor without being heavy.

Where to go: J’s Restaurant Thatien
Yes, again. It’s reliable and perfect after temple visits.

Final Thoughts

Bangkok doesn’t require you to chase “the best restaurant.”

Some of our favorite meals were:

  • unplanned
  • inexpensive
  • and completely unexpected

The real trick is simple:
follow the crowds
try what smells good
don’t overthink it

That’s when Bangkok’s food scene really opens up.
