What to Eat in Istanbul, Türkiye

What to Eat in Istanbul, Türkiye

One of the best things about Istanbul is that food is never just food here.

Every meal feels tied to the city somehow — whether it’s a tiny family-run spot hidden in a side street, a rooftop dinner overlooking the Bosphorus, or a ferry-side sandwich eaten while watching seagulls circle above the water.

What we loved most about eating in Istanbul was how different every dining experience felt. One moment you’re having rich Ottoman-style dishes in a historic neighborhood, and the next you’re sitting in a crowded local café eating something incredibly simple that somehow becomes unforgettable.

After exploring the city properly (and eating far more than we planned), here are the foods we genuinely think you shouldn’t leave Istanbul without trying — along with the restaurants that made each experience memorable.

Try Traditional Turkish Breakfast at a Rooftop Café

Turkish breakfast isn’t something you “grab quickly.” It’s an experience.

The table slowly fills with cheeses, olives, eggs, breads, jams, honey, tomatoes, cucumbers, pastries, endless tea, and little dishes you didn’t even realize you ordered.

What makes it special is the pace. Nobody rushes breakfast in Istanbul.

Where We Recommend:

Olive Restaurant & Café (Sultanahmet)

This ended up being one of our favorite starts to the day. Sitting on the rooftop with views of Hagia Sophia and the Bosphorus while drinking Turkish tea felt like the perfect introduction to Istanbul mornings.

The atmosphere is peaceful before the city fully wakes up, and honestly, the view alone makes the experience worth it.

Must Try:

  • Menemen (Turkish scrambled eggs)
  • Fresh simit bread
  • Turkish tea

Eat a Proper Kebap in Istanbul

You’ll see kebabs everywhere in Istanbul, but there’s a huge difference between tourist kebabs and genuinely good Turkish kebabs.

The best ones are smoky, rich, and surprisingly balanced rather than overly heavy.

Where We Recommend:

TurguT Restaurant (Sirkeci)

This place feels warm and welcoming in the best way possible. The atmosphere is lively without feeling overly touristy, and the portions are generous.

The standout here is the Testi Kebab — a traditional slow-cooked meat dish prepared inside a sealed clay pot that’s dramatically opened at your table.

It’s one of those meals that feels like both dinner and an experience.

Must Try:

  • Lamb Testi Kebab
  • Iskender Kebab
  • Lentil soup

Don’t Leave Without Trying Mantı

Mantı is often described as Turkish dumplings, but honestly, that description doesn’t do it justice.

Tiny handmade dumplings covered with garlic yogurt, butter sauce, herbs, and spices somehow become one of the most comforting dishes you’ll eat in Istanbul.

It’s rich, cozy, and incredibly satisfying after a long walking day.

Where We Recommend:

Mr. Dumpling Mantı (Sirkeci)

This was one of those small places we almost walked past — and it ended up becoming one of the most memorable meals of the trip.

It’s simple, local, and completely focused on doing one thing well.

No fancy setup. No tourist-show atmosphere. Just genuinely great mantı.

Must Try:

  • Classic beef mantı
  • Spicy butter sauce version

Experience Real Turkish Home-Style Food

Some meals in Istanbul feel less like restaurant dining and more like being invited into Turkish food culture itself.

That’s exactly how this next place felt.

Where We Recommend:

Çiya Sofrası (Kadıköy)

This restaurant completely changed how we thought about Turkish cuisine.

Instead of the usual tourist-heavy dishes, Çiya focuses on regional Anatolian recipes that most visitors never get to try. The menu changes often, and the food feels deeply connected to Turkish history and tradition.

The best part is that it doesn’t feel polished or performative. It feels authentic.

Must Try:

  • Seasonal stews
  • Stuffed vegetables
  • Regional kebabs
  • Turkish desserts

And honestly, visiting Kadıköy itself makes the meal even better because the neighborhood feels local and full of life.

Eat a Fish Sandwich by the Bosphorus

This might sound simple, but eating a fish sandwich near the water somehow becomes one of the most “Istanbul” experiences you can have.

It’s messy, casual, crowded, and perfect.

Where We Recommend:

Eminönü Waterfront Fish Boats

Near Galata Bridge, you’ll find famous floating boats serving grilled fish sandwiches directly by the Bosphorus.

There’s nothing luxurious about it — and that’s exactly why it works.

You grab a sandwich, sit near the water, watch ferries pass, and suddenly realize some of the best travel memories are often the simplest ones.

Must Try:

  • Balık Ekmek (fish sandwich)
  • Pickle juice drink (surprisingly good)

Enjoy a Rooftop Dinner with Bosphorus Views

There are plenty of rooftop restaurants in Istanbul, but the best ones aren’t just about the view.

They’re about the atmosphere — soft lighting, slow dinners, the sound of the city below, and watching the skyline gradually light up after sunset.

Where We Recommend:

Pleasure Terrace Roof Restaurant

This was one of those evenings where nobody wanted to leave the table.

The Bosphorus views, the warm service, the relaxed atmosphere — everything came together perfectly. It felt upscale without trying too hard.

It’s the kind of place where you slow down naturally.

Must Try:

  • Mixed grilled platter
  • Fresh seafood
  • Turkish desserts with tea

Finish with Baklava & Turkish Tea

No Istanbul food guide is complete without baklava.

But the thing that surprised us most wasn’t how sweet it was — it was how balanced and delicate good baklava can actually taste when it’s freshly made.

Paired with Turkish tea, it becomes the perfect slow afternoon break.

Where We Recommend:

Hafız Mustafa 1864

One of Istanbul’s most iconic dessert spots for a reason.

The atmosphere feels historic, elegant, and timeless. Even if there’s a line outside, it moves quickly and is absolutely worth the stop.

Must Try:

  • Pistachio baklava
  • Turkish delight
  • Turkish tea

Final Thoughts

What makes food in Istanbul special isn’t just the flavor — it’s the setting around it.

You remember:

  • The ferry ride before lunch
  • The rooftop skyline at dinner
  • The tea after a long walking day
  • The tiny hidden restaurant you almost skipped

That’s why eating in Istanbul feels so personal.
