Travey Club Guide: What We Actually Loved Doing in Hong Kong (Not Just the Usual List)
Hong Kong is one of those places that doesn’t ease you in—it hits you all at once. The skyline, the crowds, the speed of everything. But once you settle into it, you realize there’s a rhythm here, and the best way to experience it isn’t by rushing through a checklist—it’s by knowing where the moments really are.
Here’s what stood out to us the most.
Starting with the Cable Car to Big Buddha (and why it’s worth it)

We weren’t expecting the cable car ride to be such a highlight—but it really is. As you leave the city behind and start gliding over mountains and water, everything just opens up. It’s one of those rare moments where the journey actually feels better than the destination.
The Big Buddha itself is impressive, but what we enjoyed more was the contrast—it’s quiet, calm, and almost meditative compared to the rest of Hong Kong. Climbing the steps, taking in the views, and just slowing down for a bit—it’s a good way to start the trip.
Victoria Peak (yes, it’s touristy—but still worth it)

Everyone says go to the Peak, and honestly—it’s one of those things that lives up to the hype. The view is unreal. Skyscrapers, mountains, the harbour… it all comes together in a way that’s hard to explain.
If you have time, don’t just stop at the main viewing deck. Walk a little along Lugard Road—it’s quieter, less crowded, and somehow feels more personal.
Central, SoHo & the Escalators (the part that surprised us)

This wasn’t something we thought would stand out, but it did. Taking the Central–Mid-Levels escalator and just moving through the city felt like seeing Hong Kong from the inside.
You pass by cafés, small shops, art spaces, and suddenly you’re not just sightseeing—you’re observing daily life. Tai Kwun and PMQ add a creative, cultural layer to it, and the whole experience feels less “planned” and more organic.
The Star Ferry (simple, but iconic)

This is probably the shortest activity you’ll do—but also one of the most memorable.
For just a few minutes, you’re out on the water with the skyline around you. No rush, no noise—just that view. It’s simple, and that’s exactly why it works.
Avenue of Stars & the Harbour Walk (when the city slows down)

After a full day, this was the moment everything kind of paused.
Standing by the waterfront, watching the skyline light up, feeling the breeze—it doesn’t feel like a “must-do attraction,” but it’s one of those experiences that stays with you. If your timing works, the Symphony of Lights adds to it, but even without it, the atmosphere is enough.
Temple Street Night Market (for the real Hong Kong feel)

If you want to feel the energy of the city, this is where you go.
It’s messy, loud, a little chaotic—but in the best way. Sitting down at a dai pai dong, ordering random dishes, watching everything happening around you—it doesn’t feel curated, and that’s what makes it real.
It’s not about finding the “best” food—it’s about being part of the experience.
Mong Kok at Night (overwhelming, but worth it)

Mong Kok is intense. There’s no other way to describe it.
Neon lights, crowds, street food, shopping—it’s everything happening at once. But if you lean into it instead of resisting it, it becomes one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
You don’t need a plan here. Just walk, try something, stop where it looks interesting.
Final Thoughts (what we learned)
Hong Kong isn’t a place you “complete.” It’s a place you experience in layers.
You’ll have moments that feel fast and overwhelming, and others that are unexpectedly calm. The trick is not trying to control it too much—just let the city unfold as you move through it.
And if you only have a couple of days, don’t worry—you can still see a lot. Just focus on the highlights, move efficiently, and leave space for those in-between moments. That’s where Hong Kong really comes alive.
