Top Activities to Do in New York City

There’s something about New York City that no photo or movie can fully prepare you for. The moment you step out onto the streets, you feel the rhythm instantly — yellow cabs rushing by, steam rising from subway vents, people moving with purpose, and towering skyscrapers making you look up every few seconds.

During our recent 3-day stay in NYC, we wanted more than just a checklist of tourist attractions. We wanted experiences that captured the real feeling of the city — the energy, the views, the food, and those unexpected little moments that stay with you long after the trip ends.

Here are some of the absolute best things we experienced in New York City — the kind of activities that make you fall in love with the city without even realizing it.

Watching Manhattan from the Empire State Building

There’s a reason the Empire State Building is still iconic after all these years.

Standing at the top felt surreal. Manhattan stretched endlessly in every direction, with Central Park looking like a tiny green rectangle surrounded by steel and glass. Even though you’ve probably seen the skyline thousands of times online, seeing it in person hits differently.

What we loved most was how cinematic the whole experience felt. It’s one of those moments where NYC suddenly becomes real.

If it’s your first time in New York, this is still one of the best introductions to the city.

Exploring Central Park by Bike

One of the biggest surprises of the trip was how peaceful Central Park felt.

After the intensity of Midtown, stepping into the park almost felt like entering another city entirely. Tree-lined paths, lakes, street musicians, bridges, and locals jogging through the morning created a side of New York that felt calm and personal.

We did a guided bike tour, which ended up being one of the most enjoyable parts of the itinerary. Riding through famous movie locations while hearing stories about the park made the experience feel immersive instead of just scenic.

If you only walk through Central Park quickly, you miss its charm. Slowing down here is absolutely worth it.

Watching a Broadway Show

Broadway really is as magical as people say.

The atmosphere before the show alone is exciting — theaters glowing under neon lights, crowds gathering outside, and that sense that something special is about to happen.

Once the performance started, the energy inside the theater completely changed. The level of talent, live music, and storytelling was incredible. Even after a full day of exploring, this ended up being one of the highlights of the entire trip.

A Broadway night feels like classic New York in the best possible way.

Taking the Ferry to the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

This was one of the more emotional experiences of the trip.

The ferry ride itself is beautiful, especially when Manhattan slowly starts shrinking behind you. Seeing the skyline from the water gives you a completely different perspective of the city.

And then there’s the Statue of Liberty itself — larger, more powerful, and more symbolic in person than we expected.

Ellis Island added another layer to the experience. Walking through the immigration museum and imagining millions of people arriving in New York searching for a new life made the visit feel deeply human, not just historical.

Walking Across the Brooklyn Bridge

Some activities are touristy for a reason.

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge gave us some of the best views of the trip. The combination of the Manhattan skyline, the East River below, and the bridge’s massive cables created that perfect “I can’t believe I’m actually here” moment.

The best part was taking it slowly.

Stopping for photos, watching boats pass underneath, and seeing Manhattan grow closer with every step made the experience feel less like transportation and more like an attraction on its own.

Spending the Afternoon in DUMBO, Brooklyn

DUMBO completely exceeded expectations.

The neighborhood has this perfect mix of old industrial Brooklyn charm and modern creative energy. Cobblestone streets, converted warehouses, cozy cafés, and skyline views somehow all work together effortlessly.

Of course, we visited the famous Washington Street photo spot where the Manhattan Bridge perfectly frames the Empire State Building — and honestly, it’s even better in person.

But what made DUMBO special wasn’t just the photos. Sitting near the waterfront with coffee while watching the Manhattan skyline at sunset ended up being one of the calmest and most memorable moments of the trip.

Eating at Juliana’s Pizza

New York pizza is serious business, and Juliana’s absolutely lived up to the hype.

The coal-fired crust had that perfect balance of crispiness and chewiness, while the fresh tomato sauce and mozzarella kept everything simple in the best way possible.

What we loved most was that it didn’t feel overly touristy despite being famous. The atmosphere was warm, lively, and relaxed — exactly the kind of place you hope to find in New York.

After a long day exploring Brooklyn, this meal felt incredibly satisfying.

Getting Lost Inside The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is massive, but somehow it never felt overwhelming.

One moment we were looking at ancient Egyptian temples, and the next we were standing in front of centuries-old European masterpieces. Every section felt like stepping into a different world.

Even if you’re not deeply into art, The Met is worth visiting simply because of how immersive it feels. It’s less about “seeing everything” and more about wandering, discovering, and appreciating the atmosphere.

It’s the kind of place where you unexpectedly lose track of time.

Experiencing Sunset at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

Out of all the skyline experiences in NYC, this one felt the most unique.

SUMMIT isn’t just an observation deck — it’s an immersive experience built around mirrors, reflections, and light. At sunset, the entire space transforms into something almost dreamlike.

As the sky shifted from gold to deep blue and the city lights slowly turned on below us, the reflections created this endless feeling that’s hard to describe properly.

It genuinely felt futuristic.

If you’re deciding between observation decks in New York, this would easily be one of our top recommendations.

Ending the Trip with Dinner at Ramerino Italian Prime

Our final evening in New York ended at Ramerino, and honestly, it was the perfect choice.

After days filled with noise, walking, crowds, and constant movement, the calm atmosphere here felt incredibly relaxing. The lighting was warm, the service felt personal, and the food was refined without trying too hard.

The handmade pasta and truffle dishes stood out, but more than anything, it was the overall feeling of slowing down and reflecting on the trip that made the dinner memorable.

Sometimes the best travel moments aren’t the loudest ones.

Final Thoughts

New York City can feel overwhelming at first, but that’s also what makes it unforgettable.

What surprised us most wasn’t just the famous landmarks — it was the balance the city offers. One minute you’re surrounded by flashing lights and skyscrapers, and the next you’re sitting quietly by the water in Brooklyn or relaxing in Central Park.

That contrast is what makes NYC special.

If you’re planning your first trip, don’t try to do everything. Choose experiences that let you actually feel the city, not just rush through it.

And most importantly: leave space for unexpected moments — because in New York, those often become the best memories.
