Top Activities to Do in Edinburgh (From Our Time There)
Some cities impress you. Edinburgh pulls you in.
We arrived thinking we’d “cover the highlights.” Instead, we found ourselves slowing down, wandering more, and realising the best parts of this city aren’t just the landmarks—they’re the moments in between.
If you’re planning a trip, here are the top activities we genuinely think are worth your time—not just because they’re popular, but because they actually feel special when you’re there.
Walk Up to Edinburgh Castle (Early, Trust Us)

There’s no skipping this—it dominates the city for a reason.
But here’s the thing: it’s not just about going into the castle. The walk up to it, especially in the morning when the streets are quieter, sets the tone for everything.
Standing at the top, looking out over the rooftops, you start to understand Edinburgh a bit better. It’s layered, dramatic, and full of stories.
Get Lost Along the Royal Mile

We thought we’d just “walk through it.”
Instead, we kept getting pulled into side streets, hidden alleys, and little corners we didn’t expect. The Royal Mile isn’t something you rush—it’s something you wander.
Some of our favourite moments came from just drifting into random closes and seeing where they led.
Climb Arthur’s Seat (Even If You’re Not a Hiker)

We hesitated before doing this—and almost skipped it.
Don’t.
It’s one of those experiences that sounds simple but ends up being one of the most memorable. The climb isn’t extreme, but it feels like a proper break from the city.
At the top, with the wind hitting your face and the entire city stretched out below, it’s one of those quiet, “take it all in” moments.
Catch Sunset at Calton Hill

If you only do one viewpoint, make it this.
It’s an easy walk up, and the view is incredible—especially at sunset when the city softens and everything turns golden.
We ended up staying longer than planned, just watching the light change over the skyline.
Step Inside St Giles’ Cathedral

Right in the middle of all the movement, this place feels calm.
We didn’t plan to spend much time here, but it ended up being a pause we didn’t know we needed. Even if you’re not into architecture or history, it’s worth stepping inside for a few quiet minutes.
Do a Ghost Tour (It’s Better Than It Sounds)

We weren’t sure about this at first—it felt a bit touristy.
But it turned out to be one of the most entertaining parts of the trip. Edinburgh leans into its darker history, and hearing the stories while walking through the old streets at night adds a completely different layer to the city.
Wander Through Dean Village

This place almost doesn’t feel like it belongs in a capital city.
It’s peaceful, tucked away, and feels like something you’d stumble across in a countryside village. We went without much expectation and ended up loving it.
Explore Stockbridge Like a Local

If you want a break from the crowds, this is where to go.
Stockbridge has a slower, more local feel—independent shops, cosy cafés, and a relaxed energy that’s easy to settle into. It’s the kind of place where you stop for coffee and end up staying longer than planned.
Walk Along the Water of Leith

This was one of those unexpected highlights.
Following the river gives you a completely different perspective of the city—quieter, greener, and far removed from the busy centre. It’s perfect when you want a reset.
Head Down to Leith for Food and Waterfront Views

Leith feels like a different side of Edinburgh—more modern, a bit creative, and especially strong when it comes to food.
We came here for dinner and ended up wishing we’d spent more time. The waterfront has a great atmosphere, especially in the evening.
Try a Whisky Experience (At Least Once)

Even if whisky isn’t your thing, it’s part of the culture here.
We did a tasting one evening, and it turned out to be more interesting than expected. It’s less about drinking and more about understanding the craft behind it.
What We’d Do Differently
If we could go back, we’d plan less.
Some of our best moments weren’t on any list—they happened when we slowed down, followed a random street, or stayed somewhere longer than we meant to.
Final Thought
Edinburgh isn’t a city you conquer—it’s one you wander.
Do the big things, yes. But leave space for the small, unplanned moments too. That’s where the real experience is.
