Three Days in Porto: A Slow Travel Guide from Travey Club
There’s something about Porto that stays with you.
Maybe it’s the way the colorful houses tumble toward the Douro River, or how the city feels both historic and effortlessly alive at the same time. Maybe it’s the long lunches, the golden sunsets over the bridges, or the quiet streets you stumble upon when you weren’t even looking for anything.
At Travey Club, we love cities that reward wandering — and Porto is exactly that kind of place. If you’re visiting for the first time, three days is the perfect amount of time to see the highlights, eat incredibly well, and still slow down enough to enjoy the rhythm of the city.
Here’s how we’d spend three days in Porto.
Where to Stay in Porto

For your first trip, we always recommend staying near the river in Ribeira. It’s the heart of the historic center and makes getting around incredibly easy.
Stay Recommendation: Pestana Vintage Porto
This hotel sits right on the Ribeira waterfront, so you’ll wake up with views of the Douro River and the Dom Luís I Bridge. Almost everything in this itinerary is within walking distance, which means fewer taxis and more time exploring.
Day 1: Porto’s Historic Heart

Your first day in Porto should start where the city feels most alive — Ribeira. In the morning, before the restaurants fill and the tour groups arrive, wander along the colorful riverside streets. It’s quiet, a little magical, and one of those moments where the city feels like it belongs only to you.
From here, walk uphill to Sé do Porto Cathedral. The view from the square outside the cathedral is one of the best in the city, and it’s the perfect place to pause before continuing into the historic center.
Next, stop by São Bento Train Station. Even if you’re not catching a train, step inside — the walls are covered with thousands of blue-and-white azulejo tiles that tell stories from Portugal’s past.
Just a short walk away is Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. The curved staircase and stained glass ceiling make it feel more like a small palace than a shop. It’s incredibly popular, so booking a ticket in advance on their website is a good idea.
Not far from there, climb the Clérigos Tower. The staircase is narrow and the climb is a bit of a workout, but the panoramic view over Porto’s rooftops makes it worth every step.
For lunch, head back toward the river and grab a table at Ribeira Square Restaurant. Order grilled sardines or bacalhau, enjoy a glass of wine, and watch the boats drift along the Douro.
As the day winds down, make your way to Miradouro da Vitória or cross the bridge to Jardim do Morro for sunset. Porto glows in the evening light — it’s one of those views you’ll remember long after you leave.
For dinner, this is the night to try Porto’s most famous dish: the francesinha.
Locals swear by Café Santiago, and once you try it, you’ll understand why.
After dinner, grab a drink at Base Porto, an open-air bar near Clérigos that’s perfect for ending the night.
Day 2: Wine, Views & the Douro

Start your second day with one of Porto’s simplest pleasures — walking across the Dom Luís I Bridge. Take the lower level and head toward Vila Nova de Gaia, where Porto’s famous port wine cellars are located. This is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a port wine tasting. Houses like Graham’s, Cálem, and Sandeman offer tastings where you’ll learn about the history behind the wine that made Porto famous.
From the riverfront, hop on the Gaia Cable Car, which glides up the hillside to Jardim do Morro. The ride only takes a few minutes, but the views of Porto from above are incredible. Spend some time relaxing at Jardim do Morro or walk over to Serra do Pilar Monastery, which offers one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the city.
In the afternoon, experience Porto from the water with a Douro River cruise. These usually last about an hour and pass under the city’s six bridges, giving you a completely different perspective of the skyline.
Later in the evening, head to Cedofeita for dinner. This neighborhood feels more local and creative than the riverfront and is filled with great restaurants and wine bars.
Day 3: Markets, History & Porto’s Local Side

Start your last day with a visit to Palácio da Bolsa, a stunning historic building that once served as Porto’s stock exchange. The guided tours take you through grand rooms, but the highlight is the Arab Room, an ornate space inspired by Moorish architecture.
Right next door is the Church of São Francisco, famous for its lavish gold interior. The contrast between the simple Gothic exterior and the dramatic inside is unforgettable.
From there, take a walk toward Mercado do Bolhão, Porto’s traditional food market. Recently restored, it’s a lively place filled with local vendors selling everything from cheeses and seafood to pastries and wine. It’s a great place for a casual lunch — grab a few small bites and enjoy the atmosphere.
For your final evening in Porto, head to Miragaia, one of the city’s quieter riverside neighborhoods. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and the perfect place for a relaxed farewell dinner.
Afterwards, take one last stroll along the Douro River. Porto hits differently at night — the bridges are lit, the reflections dance on the water, and the city somehow feels even more romantic.
A Final Thought from Travey Club
Porto isn’t a city you rush. It’s a city where you wander, where a quick coffee turns into an hour-long pause, and where the best moments often happen when you weren’t planning anything at all.
Three days will show you the highlights — but Porto will almost certainly make you want to come back. And honestly? That’s the best kind of city.
