How We’d Spend 3 Days in Sapa (And Where to Stay to Make It Easy)

We’ll be honest — Sapa wasn’t a place we wanted to rush.

It’s tempting to treat it like a quick stop from Hanoi, but once you arrive, the pace changes. The air feels cooler, mornings are slower, and plans… well, they become a bit more flexible.

We spent three days here, and looking back, it felt like the perfect amount of time — enough to see the highlights, but also to just be there.

Here’s exactly how we’d do it again.

First — Where to Stay (This Makes Everything Easier)

If you want a smooth trip without overthinking logistics, stay in Sapa Town.

It might not be the most “authentic” option, but it’s the most practical:

  • easy access to transport (bus/train drop-offs)
  • restaurants and cafés within walking distance
  • tours and trekking guides readily available

From here, you can explore the valley during the day and come back to comfort at night.

Where we stayed (and would recommend):
Pao’s Sapa Leisure Hotel
It sits slightly above the town, so you still get those mountain views — but you’re only a short ride away from everything. It felt like a good balance between convenience and scenery.

Day 1: Arrive, Slow Down, and Take It In

We arrived a bit tired from the journey — and that’s exactly why we kept this day light.

  • Check in and freshen up
  • Walk around Sapa Town (no real plan)
  • Visit Sapa Lake and the Stone Church
  • Find a café and just sit for a while

If you have the energy, you can do Fansipan cable car in the afternoon — but we actually preferred saving that for clearer weather.

The goal of this day isn’t to “see everything” — it’s to settle into Sapa’s pace.

Day 2: Trekking Through Sapa Valley (The Real Highlight)

This was easily the best day.

We booked a guided trek from town and headed into the valley:

  • Y Linh Ho → Lao Chai → Ta Van

It’s not just about the views (though they’re incredible). It’s the small things:

  • kids waving as you pass
  • rice fields stretching endlessly
  • stopping for lunch in a quiet village

At some point, you stop checking your phone and just walk.

Tip:
Wear proper shoes — the trails can get muddy, especially after rain.

Optional upgrade:
Stay overnight in Ta Van instead of returning to town. If we had more time, we would’ve done this.

Day 3: Fansipan + One Last Slow Morning

We saved Fansipan for the last day — partly for weather, partly to end on a high note.

  • Take the cable car to Fansipan Peak
  • Walk around the temples and viewpoints
  • Spend time just looking out over the mountains

After that, we didn’t rush.

We grabbed coffee, took in the view one last time, and slowly made our way back for departure.

It’s a good “wrap-up” day — light, scenic, and not too demanding.

A Small Thing That Stayed With Us

Not everything in Sapa goes as planned.

Sometimes the mountains are hidden behind fog. Sometimes it rains halfway through your trek.

But weirdly, those moments didn’t take away from the trip — they added to it.

Some of our favorite memories were just sitting with a warm drink, watching the mist roll in, not really seeing much… and still feeling like we were exactly where we needed to be.

Final Thoughts from Travey Club

If you’re wondering whether 3 days is enough — it is.

But the key isn’t how much you do. It’s how you pace it.

Stay somewhere central (Sapa Town) to make things easy, then spend your energy exploring the valley and surrounding areas.

And don’t over-plan every hour.

Sapa is one of those places that rewards you when you leave a little space for it to unfold on its own.
