7-Day Mexico Family Itinerary: Cancún, Riviera Maya & Chichén Itzá — From Los Angeles
Mexico’s Caribbean coast makes it very easy to overfill an itinerary. Beaches, cenotes, Mayan ruins and nature parks can all appear close together on a map, but the travel time soon adds up—particularly when you are travelling with children.
For this seven-day family trip, we would use two hotel bases: two nights in Cancún and four nights in Playa del Carmen. Cancún provides an easy beginning after the flight from Los Angeles, while Playa del Carmen places the family closer to Xcaret, Tulum, Akumal and the main road towards Chichén Itzá.
It keeps the itinerary varied without moving hotels every second day.
Flying From Los Angeles to Cancún

Nonstop flights operate between Los Angeles International Airport and Cancún International Airport with airlines including American Airlines, Delta and United. Direct flying time is approximately five hours.
A morning flight departing Los Angeles between 8:00 and 10:00 am usually works best, arriving in Cancún during the afternoon. This leaves enough time to reach the hotel, have dinner and settle in without trying to fit sightseeing into the arrival day. Flight times vary throughout the year, so check the schedule for your exact travel dates.
From Cancún Airport, pre-book a private family transfer to the Hotel Zone. The drive normally takes around 25–35 minutes, depending on traffic.
Where Should a Family Stay?

If you want to use only one hotel for the entire trip, choose Playa del Carmen, preferably central Playa or the quieter Playacar area. It offers the most practical access to the Riviera Maya’s main attractions, restaurants and beaches.
However, our preferred arrangement is:
- Two nights in Cancún Hotel Zone
- Four nights in Playa del Carmen
Chichén Itzá can be visited as a day trip, so a third hotel is not essential.
Recommended Family Hotels in Cancún
The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort Villas & Spa
A practical option for families wanting villa-style accommodation, kitchen facilities, large pools and a central Hotel Zone location.
Recommended Family Hotels in Playa del Carmen
A quieter beachfront property located between the beach and central Playa del Carmen. It combines a resort setting with convenient access to restaurants and shops.
Day 1: Los Angeles to Cancún

Take a morning nonstop flight from Los Angeles and arrive in Cancún during the afternoon. After immigration and baggage collection, meet your driver for the transfer to the Hotel Zone.
Once checked in, keep the evening simple. Walk along the beach, let the children use the hotel pool and enjoy an early dinner.
For dinner, try Navíos, a waterfront restaurant overlooking the Nichupté Lagoon. Seafood, ceviche and grilled fish are the highlights, but there are also straightforward options for children. If the flight arrives late, dinner at the hotel will be the easier choice.
Stay: Cancún Hotel Zone
Day 2: Cancún Beach and Mayan Culture

Begin with breakfast at the hotel before visiting the Museo Maya de Cancún and the adjoining San Miguelito archaeological site. It provides a helpful introduction to Mayan history before the family sees Tulum and Chichén Itzá later in the week.
The museum currently opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and is closed on Mondays. If your visit falls on a Monday, replace it with additional beach time.
Have lunch at El Fish Fritanga, a relaxed lagoon-side restaurant known for fish tacos, ceviche and grilled seafood.
Spend the afternoon at the hotel beach and pool. In the early evening, visit La Isla Cancún for a waterfront walk, shopping and ice cream. Families with younger children can also visit the Interactive Aquarium.
For dinner, Taco y Tequila at La Isla is an easy family option for tacos, quesadillas and guacamole.
Stay: Cancún Hotel Zone
Day 3: Cancún to Playa del Carmen

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast followed by a final morning at the beach. Check out around midday and have an early lunch before leaving Cancún.
A private transfer from the Hotel Zone to Playa del Carmen normally takes around 60–75 minutes. After checking in, allow the family some time to rest before heading into town.
Spend the evening walking along Quinta Avenida, Parque Fundadores and the beachfront promenade. The Voladores de Papantla can often be seen performing near Parque Fundadores, and the surrounding streets are good for local crafts and souvenirs.
For dinner, visit El Fogón for tacos al pastor, quesadillas and grilled meats. Afterwards, try a marquesita—a crisp local dessert commonly filled with cheese, chocolate or caramel.
Stay: Playa del Carmen
Day 4: A Full Day at Xcaret

After breakfast, travel to Xcaret Park, approximately 15–25 minutes from central Playa del Carmen. You can use the park’s organised hotel transportation or arrange a private transfer.
Start with one of the underground rivers before exploring the Butterfly Pavilion, Aviary, Coral Reef Aquarium, Jaguar Island and Children’s World. Leave part of the afternoon free for the beach, natural pools and quieter areas of the park.
Xcaret currently opens daily from 8:30 am until approximately 10:00 pm. Stay for the evening Xcaret México Espectacular production, which brings together Mexican history, music and regional traditions. Confirm the show time when you arrive.
The Xcaret Plus ticket is usually convenient for families because it includes a buffet meal. Lunch is a good opportunity to try cochinita pibil, handmade tortillas and other regional dishes. Have an early dinner or snack inside the park before the evening show.
Stay: Playa del Carmen
Day 5: Tulum and Akumal

Leave Playa del Carmen at around 7:00 am and travel to the Tulum Archaeological Zone. Arriving close to opening time gives the family cooler weather and a quieter visit.
Spend approximately two hours seeing El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, Tulum’s defensive walls and the viewpoints above the Caribbean. Tulum currently opens daily at 8:00 am, with final admission at 3:30 pm.
Continue to Akumal Bay for a licensed guided turtle-snorkelling session. Children should be confident in the water and must follow the protected-area rules. Younger children can remain at the beach with an adult.
Have lunch at Lol-Ha Restaurant, overlooking Akumal Bay. Fish tacos, ceviche, grilled fish and chicken dishes make it suitable for a mixed family group.
Return to Playa del Carmen by mid-afternoon and keep the rest of the day free for the pool or beach.
For dinner, visit La Perla Pixan Cuisine and try pescado tikin xic, handmade tortillas or another regional Mexican dish.
Stay: Playa del Carmen
Day 6: Chichén Itzá, a Cenote and Valladolid

This is the earliest and longest day of the itinerary. Leave Playa del Carmen at approximately 6:00 am with a private driver or small-group tour.
Arrive at Chichén Itzá around opening time and explore the site with a licensed guide. The main landmarks include El Castillo, the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors, the Group of a Thousand Columns, the Sacred Cenote and El Caracol observatory.
Chichén Itzá currently opens daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, with final entry at 3:00 pm.
After the archaeological visit, continue to Cenote Ik Kil for a swim. Bring water shoes, swimwear and a dry change of clothes.
Travel onwards to Valladolid for lunch at El Atrio del Mayab. Try sopa de lima, cochinita pibil, empanadas or grilled chicken. After lunch, take a short walk around the main square, colourful colonial streets and the Cathedral of San Servacio.
Return to Playa del Carmen during the evening. Since it has been a long day, keep dinner light and close to the hotel.
Stay: Playa del Carmen
Day 7: Playa del Carmen to Los Angeles

Enjoy breakfast and, if the flight schedule allows, have a final swim or short beach walk.
Leave Playa del Carmen approximately four to four-and-a-half hours before the flight. This allows 60–75 minutes for the airport transfer and around three hours for international check-in, baggage and security.
An afternoon flight from Cancún to Los Angeles works particularly well because the family does not need to rush through breakfast or check-out.
Travey Club Insights
The most important decision in this itinerary is where to stay. Cancún is excellent for the arrival and the first beach days, but Playa del Carmen is the more useful base for the trip as a whole.
Using two hotels reduces unnecessary driving while still allowing the family to enjoy both resort areas. The sequence also matters: a cultural morning is followed by beach time, the full Xcaret day is followed by a shorter Tulum and Akumal outing, and the longest excursion to Chichén Itzá is saved until the family has settled into the trip.
Seven days will not cover every attraction along the coast, but it is enough to give the family beaches, Mayan history, Mexican food, wildlife and time together without making each day feel like a race.
