14-Day Greece Couples Signature Itinerary: Athens, Paros & Santorini — From Sydney

Greece works beautifully when each stop has a different role. Athens brings the history and energy, Paros gives the trip room to breathe, and Santorini finishes with the scale of the caldera. We have kept this route to three bases rather than adding another island, because fewer hotel changes mean more time for long lunches, coastal swims and evenings that do not begin with another suitcase.

This itinerary is designed for two adults travelling from Sydney. Flight and ferry schedules change, so the transport times should only be added after the exact services have been booked.

The best locations for easy access

In Athens, we would stay in Makrygianni or Koukaki. The Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Plaka and Temple of Olympian Zeus are close enough to reach on foot, while Acropoli Metro keeps the airport and the rest of the city manageable. The Athens Gate Hotel is our balanced recommendation for its location and rooftop views. Couples wanting a more intimate five-star property can consider AthensWas on Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street.

In Paros, Parikia is the most convenient base for the ferry terminal, but Naoussa is the better fit for this couples itinerary. The old harbour, restaurants and evening walks stay close, while Kolymbithres, Paros Park and the northern beaches are easy to reach by taxi or rental car. Mr & Mrs White Paros is around 800 metres from central Naoussa and provides pools and a quiet setting. Senia Hotel is an appealing alternative for sea views and easier access to Piperi Beach.

In Santorini, we would choose Fira rather than Oia when easy access is the priority. Fira has the island’s main bus hub and simpler connections to Athinios Port, the airport, Oia, Akrotiri and the southern beaches. El Greco Resort & Spa sits approximately ten minutes on foot from central Fira and provides more space and several pools away from the busiest lanes. Astro Palace is a smaller upscale alternative close to the centre.

Flights and island connections

There is currently no nonstop flight between Sydney and Athens. One-stop itineraries are available with Emirates via Dubai and Etihad via Abu Dhabi, with other routings sometimes available through Doha or an Asian hub. A practical itinerary normally takes around 22–27 hours. We would book one protected through-ticket with checked baggage instead of combining unrelated long-haul flights.

The conventional ferry from Piraeus to Paros takes around four hours and is usually more comfortable in unsettled water than a small high-speed vessel. Current 2026 timetable examples show morning Blue Star sailings, but travellers should confirm the exact departure before arranging the hotel transfer. Paros to Santorini is faster, with a high-speed SEAJETS crossing taking approximately 90 minutes on the working September schedule. The return uses a short Santorini–Athens flight before the international journey to Sydney. If those flights are on separate tickets, the connection is not protected, so we would leave at least five hours or spend the previous night in Athens.

Day 1 — Sydney to Athens

Leave Sydney CBD around four hours before the international departure. The Airport Link is convenient with light luggage, but a pre-booked car is easier for a couple carrying two large suitcases. After check-in and security, sit down for a light meal with two mains, water and coffee rather than relying entirely on the first cabin service, then board the one-stop flight to Athens.

Day 2 — Athens arrival, the Acropolis Museum and Plaka

Pre-book a car from Athens Airport to Makrygianni and leave the luggage at The Athens Gate Hotel if the room is not ready. Begin with Greek yoghurt, eggs and coffee at Arcadia, then visit the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Acropolis Museum before lunch at Mani Mani, where vegetable-led plates, slow-cooked meat and orange pie make a good introduction to regional Greek cooking. Walk through Plaka and Anafiotika, return to the hotel for a proper rest and reserve a rooftop table at Kuzina in Thissio for the evening.

Day 3 — The Acropolis and classical Athens

Book the earliest Acropolis entry and continue downhill to the Ancient Agora and Temple of Hephaestus while the weather is still comfortable. Have lunch at To Kafeneio, ordering courgette fritters, stuffed vine leaves and one traditional cooked main, then return to the hotel during the warmest part of the afternoon. Later, walk to Philopappos Hill for broad views across Athens and finish near Syntagma with meze, grilled dishes and local wine at Tzitzikas kai Mermigas.

Day 4 — Modern Athens, the National Archaeological Museum and Lycabettus

Walk through the National Garden to Syntagma and the Parliament quarter before returning to the hotel for a short break. Continue by taxi to Oikeio for home-style Greek cooking, then spend the afternoon with the Mycenaean, Cycladic and classical highlights of the National Archaeological Museum. Take the Lycabettus funicular for the late-day city view and reserve Orizontes for seafood or Mediterranean mains overlooking Athens.

Day 5 — Athens to Paros

Collect an early breakfast box and leave the hotel in time to reach Piraeus 45–60 minutes before the confirmed ferry departure. Take the conventional Blue Star ferry to Parikia, then use a pre-booked transfer to reach Mr & Mrs White Paros in Naoussa. Once the luggage is settled, have a late lunch at RADA with Parian salad and grilled fish, swim at Agioi Anargyroi and spend the evening around the Venetian harbour before dinner at Yemeni, choosing local cheese, chickpea dishes, slow-cooked lamb and Parian wine.

Day 6 — Kolymbithres and Paros Park

Take a taxi to Kolymbithres before the beach fills and continue to the Agios Ioannis Detis peninsula for a coastal walk through Paros Park. Have a simple lunch of salad and grilled calamari at Monastiri Beach Bar, stay for a swim and return to the hotel for a long rest. In the evening, take a car to Siparos and ask about the fish of the day before ordering seafood starters, local vegetables and a bottle of Greek wine.

Day 7 — Lefkes, village lanes and Golden Beach

Collect a small rental car and drive inland to Lefkes, followed by the quieter lanes of Prodromos and Marpissa. Continue to Golden Beach for a relaxed lunch at Blue Restaurant Bar, choosing a salad, grilled fish or the day’s cooked dish, then spend the afternoon by the water. Return to Naoussa before dark and have dinner at Marmitta, where the seasonal approach fits naturally after a day crossing the island.

Day 8 — Antiparos day trip

Drive to Pounta and take the short vehicle ferry to Antiparos, making sure the rental agreement permits the crossing. Visit the Cave of Antiparos after its morning opening, then explore the Kastro lanes in Antiparos Town and settle into lunch at Kalokeri for vegetable-led plates and seafood. Spend the afternoon swimming at Soros Beach, return to Paros with enough daylight for an easy drive to Naoussa and choose Taverna Glafkos for grilled octopus, fish and a waterfront table.

Day 9 — Paros to Santorini

Transfer from Naoussa to Parikia and board the confirmed high-speed ferry to Athinios Port. A pre-booked driver is the easiest way to leave the busy port and reach El Greco Resort in Fira. After leaving the luggage, visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, try Santorini fava and tomato fritters at Naoussa Restaurant and return to the hotel for a rest. Walk along Fira’s caldera promenade as the light changes, then reserve Argo for seafood, island produce and a glass of Assyrtiko.

Day 10 — Oia in the morning and Pyrgos in the evening

Take the public bus from Fira to Oia early, while the lanes and castle viewpoints are still comfortable. Walk to the Ammoudi overlook and stop at Karma for fava, tomato fritters and a light main before returning to Fira for a slow afternoon by the hotel pool. Later, take a taxi to Pyrgos, explore the Kasteli lanes and have dinner at Cava Alta, choosing white-aubergine dishes, lamb or seafood.

Day 11 — Akrotiri, southern beaches and Santorini wine

Book one private driver for the day so parking and wine tasting never become part of the couple’s workload. Visit Akrotiri Archaeological Site, stop at the safe upper viewpoint at Red Beach and continue to Perissa for lunch at Fratzeskos, confirming the price of any fish sold by weight before it is prepared. Spend some time by the beach, finish the afternoon with an Assyrtiko tasting at Santo Wines and return to Fira for a relaxed meze dinner at Ouzeri.

Day 12 — The caldera from the water

Join a small-group catamaran from Vlychada for the volcanic coastline, swimming stops and caldera views, choosing an operator that includes hotel transfers, lunch, drinks and towels. After returning to El Greco, leave enough time to shower and rest before taking a short car ride to Imerovigli. Walk only as far as the established Skaros viewpoints late in the day, then reserve Aegeon for Greek mains, dessert and the final Santorini evening.

Day 13 — Santorini to Athens and Sydney

Take the earliest suitable flight from Santorini to Athens and maintain a generous self-transfer buffer before the international departure. Collect and recheck the luggage if the flights are on separate tickets, then have a simple lunch inside the secure departures area, such as Greek salad, a warm pita or grilled protein with water. Board the one-stop flight to Sydney with the essential documents, medication and one change of clothing in the cabin bags.

Day 14 — Sydney arrival

Complete immigration, collect the luggage and clear biosecurity before arranging the final trip into the city. If both travellers still feel fresh, the Airport Link is the simplest option; after the long flight, a pre-booked car may be more comfortable. A familiar light meal at the airport can also make the final transfer easier without creating another task once home.

Travey Club Insights

The strength of this route is not the number of places covered but the contrast between them. Athens carries the history, Paros opens the middle of the trip, and Santorini provides the closing scale. For access, we would keep Makrygianni in Athens, Naoussa in Paros and Fira in Santorini. Staying in Oia is tempting, but Fira is the smarter base when the plan includes Akrotiri, a winery, a catamaran, the airport and the ferry port.

Book the international flights first, followed by the two island transfers, the hotels and the activities with limited capacity. Keep every ferry and flight time provisional until a carrier, service number and ticket have been confirmed. That one detail protects the rhythm of the entire itinerary.
